As a result of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s order to have all staff members and residents at Texas nursing homes tested, the City of Garland requested COVID-19 testing assistance from the State of Texas on behalf of Winters Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility. This was done due to the presence of a COVID-19 positive resident. The State of Texas responded by sending an Emergency Medical Task Force to the Garland facility on Monday, May 18, 2020 to test all residents and staff (57 residents, 114 healthcare workers). Test results indicate that four additional residents and four healthcare workers were positive for COVID-19. Additionally, a fifth healthcare worker tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, May 24. Winters Park has taken appropriate actions to mitigate disease spread including, but not limited to, restricting positive healthcare workers from the facility, isolating COVID-19 positive residents, assigning healthcare workers to exclusively care for COVID-19 patients, restricting other patients to their rooms, restricting resident gatherings, and restricting visitor access. Additionally, all residents, their families and staff have been notified of the presence of COVID-19 positive patients and healthcare workers. The Garland Health Department (GHD) remains in daily communication with Winters Park to support any needs that they may have.
COVID-19 is a particularly serious threat to nursing homes and other long term care facilities. There are a total of six nursing homes in Garland that fall under Governor Abbott’s order and testing efforts continue at the remaining facilities. GHD will continue to provide updates as Winters Park responds to the cases in their facility, and as other Garland nursing homes test residents and staff.
